Fresh water pump leak

Hey guys,
I just replaced the impeller in my water pump on my volvo 302 and now I have water leaking around the shaft that holds the pulley. Did I screw something up?

Does your Volvo 302 have a model number or a year?

Hey Don,
The boat is a 1995 model. and the motor is a ford 302 efi.
