I took a cruise out of ??Ft Lauderdale, back in '92. It was a convention cruise and we went to the Bahamas. I had always wanted to do one if for no other reason than the food.

I think we only had one dinner on the cruise. It was a spectacular display. Problem was that the ship was rolling just enough to put me on the edge of seasickness. I couldn't eat a thing.

Be sure to take your hiking tennies. You'll probably do a ton of walking while getting around the ship, especially for nine days.

Have a blast! :)

Plan on getting lost....alot! :D I went on a weekend cruise to nowhere a few years back. No destination....You just cruse around in international waters for the weekend. The food was awesome, the entertainment was awesome, the only problem was once I left the room I could never find my way back! The ship is so large, it's like a floating city! When you board...get a map! Seriously...they give them out! I just was too excited to get one. I think you will have one 'ell of a time. :)

Re: Free Cruise........

Mike, you and the Mrs. will love it! My first cruise I was coerced into going. After all, what are you going to do on a ship all day long with no rods. But I was wrong, and have been on 2 cruises since. They are a great way to take a vacation. The food is awesome! Lots of things to do on the ship. The ports of call are interesting and fun (I just try to stay away from the touristy things and get a cab on my own and see the real island).

The most fun of the cruise is you can spend a lot of money, or no money at all - it is your choice. All food and drink on the ship is free (I don't think Carnival Cruise has gone to the free seating where you have to pay for different restaurants, but even there, you can still use the main dining room and room service at no charge). Soft drinks, coffee, hot and cold tea, hot chocolate, all included in the price - only have to pay for alcohol consumed. So, only costs are what you want to buy for gifts and what tours you want to do off the ship. But always a cheap shuttle to the beach for some sun and fun there.

So, go have a blast and enjoy your 9 days!

Actually with Carnival you can buy a soda card for all you can drink otherwise sodas are charged for. You will be given an "opportunity" to tip at the end of the cruise this is your choice but will seem forced. I always tip accordingly. Take your own camera, the ones taken aboard can get expensive.

Prepare to dress one or two nights for dinner. Dancing, shows, music, partys etc are all included. I believe it is cheapest vacation around.

Get your pass port!!!!!!

Re: Free Cruise........

Yes Im a little worried about passport.Gonna get on that tonight.......other than that because the airlines wont switch the names on tickets 2 new tickets have to be purchased and we offered to pay for them......The people that are doing this for me are my old bosses in a construction company I used to manage. They agreed to let me do some side work to pay off one ticket and thats all they want us to pay.....so All we need is spending cash......To be honest I think the biggest thrill is that somebody likes us enough to offer this to us.The second biggest thrill is that my wife will be able to experience something she deserves because of how amazing she is to me, that I would never be able to give her on my own....Shes a good women who should get one cruise per month for what she has to put up with from me as a husband :D

Re: Free Cruise........

Oh and yes boatbuoy I will :) .........Funny thing is, I asked the woman who we are going with if we could fish from the boat and she looked at me with this look of horror that I would even ask such a dumb redneck, white trash question.....that look alone was worth the price of admission:D We are on the uppermost deck so i guess we are pretty far from the water.Part of me thinks what good is boat if you cant fish from it :D ...

Oh, and be careful calling it a boat. One of the cruises I was on, the staff kept getting miffed cause it was a ship, not a boat. ;) Again, have fun! Cruises are a great value when it comes to vacations (and when you get them for free, that is even better! :) )!

Gotcha Aspeck......Its a ship :) And yes it seems to be a great value, we will be at sea for 8 days actully so the price will come out far below 200 bucks a day for entertainmnt, fine food and seeing parts of the world in a way we never have before, so if you plan ahead and get a good deal on a package its really is not anymore expensive than alot of other vaction ideas......I mean a couple years back we went to Disney world and I swear just one day there with my kids cost almost the same as this cruise :D

Re: Free Cruise........

Mikeandronda,
I've been on at least 12 cruises before and here are a couple of things you'll want to watch out for:
1. when you board the ship, you will be issued a credit card/room key. All shipboard transactions are done via your room key credit card. Everything gets billed to your room. When you board, you will have to provide a major credit card to secure your "line of credit". This is for 2 reasons: 1, they dont have to worry about employees skimming money and 2, and most important, you never really know how much you've spent. The night before the cruise ends, you will get your "final" bill. This is where it hurts. Most shipboard drinks are around $5 each. Plus they automatically add a 18% gratuity to all alcohol purchases (might be 15%, I'm not sure of the exact figure they are charging now) The typical person may have 11 drinks a day(4 in the hot sun out by the pool, 2 at lunch, 2 at dinner, and 3 during the evening and at the shows)
Thats 11 drinks, assuming you dont buy drinks for others. Thats per person. So take that 22 drinks per day, multiplied by 7 days and your bar tab at the end is almost $909.(7 x(22 x 5) x 18% = 908.60)
Carnival is counting on you doing this. Its how they make their money. You may think 11 drinks a day is alot, but I've been with friends who run up a 2k tab.
2. Tipping - Its usually $14 per person per day. Thats another $196 you'll need in CASH on the last day. The room stewards and wait staff do not get paid. They work for tips only. They do not share in the bar tab tip, that is for the cruise line. Not tipping is considered rude. Believe me, the ones who work for tips will bend over backwards for you.
3. Shore excursions - This is another area where the cruise line makes out like a bandit. A lot of the excursions will cost you upwards of $75 per person, some more, some less. If you stop at 3 ports and took 3 excursions apiece, you'll have another $450 on your room tab. Most excursions can be booked right on the dock with the locals. They will typically run around 30% less (that the cut of the cruise line) The cruise line will warn you to "only take ship sponsored trips" as a scare tactic. In all my years, I've never had a problem with unscrupulous vendors.
4.Other expenses...If you plan on driving to the port, plan to pay around $10-15 per day for parking. Cash only, no credit card. This is the going rate for cruise port parking.

I dont mean to scare you, but I did want to let you see the "real numbers" that you could accidentially incur. What we always do is 1. skip the alcohol. My wife and I dont drink and they always have Ice tea available for free. 2.We may do 1 shore excursion if it really looks interesting. Usually we will set out on our own. For example, in St Croix, the ship offered a $20 per person to the far side of the island for shopping. We walked to the local bus stop which is 100ft from the port, and rode to the same place for the grand total of $1 per person. We also got to see the island via the backroads and not the main expressway. Yes it took an hour and a half to get there, but we got a wonderful view of the island and met some interesting characters on the way. When it was time to go home, instead of the bus, we went to one of the tour operators who were all lined up in a row. We offered them $3 per person to take us back. They wanted $15. When we told them "thats OK, I'll as the next van behind you", their tone changes and they said "Get on board" The shopping tours did not have set times so there was a good chance that the vans would ahve to go back empty. If you keep a friendly attitude, you can work great deals with the locals.

Cruises can be very inexpensive or they can break you. As long as you contain your expenditures and track your bills, it will be very enjoyable. (They can always give you your current tab amount at the Pursers desk 24 hours a day)

We too are heading down to the Caribbean in mid march. Rack up number 13 for us.
Enjoy...
Nav

Re: Free Cruise........

Thanx Nav, We also do not drink alcholic beverages and our hosts have said they have the end tip covered for us. They also are experienced Cruisers so we should be in good hands. My wife can be tight when it comes to spending so I think we will be ok....I think. I didnt know that of the room stewerdsand wait staff work for tips only.......hmmm Im guessing their room and board is covered though. We are going the 17th to the 25th.....What line will you be on??????

Re: Free Cruise........

The room stewards and wait staff do get room and board while on the ship and also a very very small salary (on most cruise lines). They will be on ship for verying lenghts of time - from 2 months to 6 months at a time before they have a month or 2 off. Usually they will alternate ports of call off also.

The cruise staff will work very hard for you and the cruises I was on, they deserved every cent they got in tips, and more. Most of them got more of a tip than "required" because they did such a good job.

Re: Free Cruise........

That sounds like a pretty cool job for a single guy.......I have been told that we wont tneed passports and this is what I found on the net.

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.

This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.
