I was given an old 15' jon boat that was equipped with a 20 HP Chrysler Electric start. I was told that the only thing wrong with it was the water pump, and hasn't been cranked since 2002. This is my first boat and have no experience with outboards. A couple of ole'timers told me I'd be wasting time and money trying to revive a Chrysler. What do ya think???????

Welcome to the forum.

A motor that runs, takes you where you wanna go and back again cant be waste of time ! But messing with a motor worn to the limit of great costs to restore can be.

Get a friend that really knows of outboard ( not the local knowseverything ) to examine it and get an idea of what is wrong. Purchase a manual, almost the only book that pays for itself. Then get problems fixed. Lots of people that gives motors away and sells them, adresses serious problems like - it only needs tune up - ist just the timing, and then again, sometimes it really is.

Well, since it is free, you can afford to stick a little into it. $20-40 is a whole lot cheaper than any other motor you could buy.

To do list.
First do a compression test and check for spark.

If they check out, then change the sparkplugs, waterpump, and rebuild the carb.

You may need a new fuel hose and fuel pump, but that can wait till later.

So maybe you drop $50 into the motor and only get 5 years use out of it. Still sounds like a deal to me.
