Ok my friend's g/f has a newer Fourwinns Horizon RS w/a Volvo Penta 4.3L .and it wont start.

When the key is turned all we hear is fule pump coming on. No clicks or anything else and battery is new. Engine doesnt crank at all.

We thought maybe it was the ignition switch so i bypassed it and got same results. We checked all fuses they're all good.

She said she used to have a problem with starting it , the throttle would need to be moved back and forth some before it would start. I noticed when we move it while ign is on, you can hear fuel pump turn off.I know how auto electric works and all that but im not familiar with boats and all their safety switchs.I am planning on opening panel and trying to bypass safety switch on throttle to see if its bad.

I was wondering if there was a relay of sorts between the ign switch and solenoid and where it could be.I cant reach to the starter to try and arch the contacts and see if it turns over. What other safety switchs are there also?

I know help is limited to reading about problems.I am trying to think of everything i did to give anyone a better idea of where else to look. Any help is great, before we take it to a mechanic and dish out the $$$

Re: Fourwinns RS not starting.

There is a neutral safety switch located on the throttle/shifter control.
There are so many kinds it's almost impossible to tell you exactly where it is. But if you can see the back of the control, there should be 2 yellow/red wires going to a switch on it.
To test the switch just remove the wires from the switch and hook them together and see if the engine will crank. Make sure it's in neutral before you check, with those wires together it will start in gear.

There is also a slave relay on the engine that may be bad. You could pull the relay out of the receptical and check for voltage on the SMALL yellow/red wire there if you can't get to the neutral safety switch. Those relays fail more often than the neutral safety switches.

well as i suspected, but coudlnt do it last night cause it was way too dark. The starter is dead or at least the solenoid. I tested continuity of all the relays and wires and everything was good. I then arched the soledoid and it didnt even turn so thats it.

I was just trying to get an idea of some other possibles since it was really late last night to check most of it.

BadKitty, Did the boat take on water ever? Forget the plug maybe. I hate to admit to it but it has happened to my fourwinns twice and eventually it gets the starter.

2001 fourwinns horizon 4.3l VP
