Hi all,

I pulled my carpet up in my 1984 16' Galaxy last night and found a bit of a suprise--the aft floor in nothing but fiberglass--no wood at all. I've heard of boats having glass floors, but the bow floor is wood that has been glassed over unlike the plain fiberglass (no wood) in then stern. Is this factory, or am I fixing someone else's mess?

How do you know there is no wood? Would not be likely that a 16 footer would have any part of the floor all glass.

I've broken through a weak spot and found no wood. I've also drilled several holes throughout the stern and again found no wood. There is a change the the glass (goes from clear to black) where I think the wood ends. I'll try to get pics up.

nwright,

It may have been repaired, black glass sounds like carbon fiber. Expensive stuff and very strong. before you go ripping all of it out you may want to do a little more poking around.

Unless I am off base with the black glass theory, which I may be. It could also be that the wood rotted and flaked away, wood gets black when it rots, which could have discolored the glass.

Peace.

Ed.

Ed,
Its not CF. I have made several custom parts for my RC planes out of CF, and actually thought about using it if my 18' Larson project. The 2 areas have been seamed (makes me think the floor has been replaced), and the stern section has what appears to be black paint (or black glass resin)while the bow section has a clear resin where I can see the wood.
