looks as if its time to pop the drive and change bellows, gimbal bearing and uj's very soon before you sink.do not leave boat on a mooring until repaired.

That red is commonly know as rust. It's about to get very expensive.

When was the last time the drive was pulled and the bellows inspected for water, and the ujoint shaft splines greased. Should be a yearly thing.

Re: found a leak

your gonna need more than a kit.
like DonS said, its gonna get expensive now.
not only do you have preventative maint you also now have corrective maint.
one could have been done to prevent the other but now both get done or the price will simply keep climbing.

Re: found a leak

Sorry, this is my first boat. I found this leak my first time on the water.

What parts would I need? Or are you suggesting to take it to a shop? Which I am not really willing to do.

Only thing not in that kit that dingdongs mentioned is u-joints.

I understand corrective maintains is needed but what?

The bellows leaked water got on the gimbal bearing and u joints what else would be in there getting damaged?

Re: found a leak

I agree you need to pull the outdrive and see what is going on. BUT - the red doesn't look like rust to me. It is too red. It looks like red grease that someone slathered on the shaft.

Re: found a leak

Lube is new and blue :)

Found the bellows detached from the boat side

pretty much no way to reattach it huh?

So I will be pulling the drive and stuff
I searched and found that the only special tool i need is the engine alignment tool?

Re: found a leak

your time will cost you nothing and as winter is coming on strong you have time on your side.there are plenty of videos to look at here;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q9iXAWsrYA&p=ACF1829F573326AF&playnext=1&index=11 or similar.as stated a few tools r req'd.an alignment tool for re-aligning may be ok but this tool will make sure all is ok before popping drive back on
bellows, gimbal bearing for peace of mind come to think of it should be able to get a complete kit.look on a website closer to you.over here in the uk we have them so should be even easier there.would consider replacing impeller whilst drive is off too.if winterising first drain all water from block and manifolds & spray fogging oil into cylinders if freezing weather is close.its gonna get dirty and an extra pair of hands is gonna make lifting easier.

Re: found a leak

like I say, its gonna get expensive now.
ujoints, wasted, input yoke seal, wasted
the last flying monky even installed the gimbal bearing backwards.
means NO service manual was used.
good luck.

Re: found a leak

Yes, rodbolt. Please help why is it backwards?
The bearing is hard to move...I thought the cause was water damage. Would being backwards cause this?

So, far everything looks new and in good shape. And I was told lots of the stuff was new.(and by sight it is)

I just (aug. 20)bought this boat for next season and I am in the process fixing/ upgrading.

It ran great!! just leaked some water........

Re: found a leak

Time to buy a new transom assembly for sure. The lip where the bellows attaches is beyond repair. (There is a kit I have seen to repair it, but the cost is ridiculous. You can buy a good used complete assembly for that).

The backwards bearing is more than likely not the cause of it being hard to move - you're right about the water causing it. (Mercruiser used to put them in like you have pictured, but many people simply turned the bearing and replaced it instead of the entire assembly. That caused Mercrusier to turn the assembly around to prevent that. Many still install them the way pictured in order to turn the bearing out easily. It is possible to get the grease groove in the wrong place if not done correctly).

Kind of a moot point now, but earlier when I wrote:

the red doesn't look like rust to me. It is too red. It looks like red grease that someone slathered on the shaft.

And you responded by saying:

Lube is new and blue :)

What lube are you referring to? From the pictures, the grease is obviously red.

Re: found a leak

the gear oil may be blue but that means it has no water ingress in it.unfortunately as stated best to start looking for a reasonable priced bell housing and transom plate as without the flange there is nowhere for your bellows to adhere to as its rotted away.if you look in the SEARCH threads above and type in defeated!!!!! with the exclamation marks you will see what yours should look like ,tools reqd and some other problems you will face.if you look on ebay ,http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/merc...9517018QQptZBoatQ5fPartsQ5fAccessoriesQ5fGear $60 auction or yours for $75.time to invest in a good one and save u having to swim.the bearing and bellows would be that alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: found a leak

The link you posted is for the outdrive only - not the transom assembly. It is the transom assembly you need. Check ebay... craigslist... local classifieds... etc for a used assembly.
