oh, and on steering....you may not need to replace it if you have the motor connector. cable-and-sheave steering works fine (still used on many boats incl some large commercial ones), you just need to take time to learn to adjust it and get it right. modern steering is much simpler, just bolt it on, but will cost abt $160-200+ instead of maybe $20 to refurb a C&S system.
