Re: Ford Pick-up trucks

Actually I am in the market for spares Techno.
This has a MWM (Mercedes With Mann) Diesel.
It is a D229-4, and I need a starter motor.
It is a Bosch part.
I could get the part number if you do have/know of a source of supply.
Here they are pretty expensive.
There is the option of getting a rebuild, but it needs a new shaft/cog (think that is what John called it) machined, and the ? (No.) outer fields re-done.
I am all at sea with this, but that is what John said (I think!)
Would like to compare the rebuid price with the new (in USA).
This is what the MWM Diesel guy quoted me:
New S/Motor from:
Ford Dealership Aud$2,870
From him (ordered in Brazil and flown out) Aud $1,590 (including Aud$650 air freight).
So you can see my interest in getting a price from you.

Cheers
Phillip

I reckon there must be a cheaper option Phillip: the cog must be a part that can be interchanged with others and machining a new bush isn't major bucks. Rewinding the field coils isn't a major job either so perhaps best to get it done local.

Just my two pennies worth (pre-decimal pennies mind! :D )

Phil, that donk would'nt pull the skin off a ricebubble and the repairs will send you broke - SELL IT TO THE DIESEL MECHANIC, he is probably interested.

Then, find a clean 351 (clevland, not windsor), there are heaps around for less than the cost of the diesel starter. Put a set of headers on her, convert to LPG, and you're good to go.

You won't need to worry about brakes/suspension etc - the F100 was released in Aus with the 351 option.

Funny you should say that Dunaruna.
That is an option John has put to me....right down to using the Clevland and not the Windsor.
The other opinion he put forward was using the Ford 6cyl...the one before the electronics or something...can't recal the model. What are your views on a 6cyl?
Is a LPG kit around $2,000 fully installed?
I will chew it over some more with John tomorrow. I know he dosn't consider it a difficult job. He is on the payroll, I have a workshop, he enjoys doing mechanical work.
The Diesel Mechs (Motores Deisiel) want to come out and see it, so I will ask them what they will pay and see what happens.
I have looked at the Trading Post for an idea on the price of Clevlands and they are all over the place. Any idea what I would pay? Need auto too I reckon.
My thinking behind all this is ......a new Rice-Wagon ute will set me back $20K (alloy deck/power/air)so why not throw some bucks at this and have a real truck.....where age is irrevelant. Got a new Navara 2.4 back in 2000 and it's OK, but not really "nice". Just another white ute.....
How are you keeping anyway Aldo? Well I hope.
Cheers
Phillip

Ball park................You should be able to pick up a remaned (new bearing shells, reco heads, new oil pump, new gaskets - not a fully reconditioned motor) for about $2500, including accessories. A tranny to suit would be around $1000 (secondhand with warranty) or $2500 fully reco. Engine mounts are cheap. The radiator should already be heavy duty but if you need to replace it with a V8 rad it would cost around $200 SH or $500 new.

If you hunted around for good secondhand stuff, $4500 should just about cover it. Around $6000 reco.

I'm good, not so for the better half, the dreaded 'C' word is back :( . How about you guys - all well I trust?

P.S. It's not a 'pickup', it's a ute!! ;)

Really hope everything goes well for your wife.
Us...well to many hours working, which we are really trying to get under control.
Thanks for the info. Will keep you posted on what/when we do with the motor. John starts tomorrow on the body.
Cheers
Phillip
