Just want opinions etc here.
My worker John has a mid 70's F100 with a MWM Diesel D229-4 in it for sale at Aud$500.
Truck was made in Brazil.
Apparantly these we called F1,000 at the time as they were not "normal" so to speak, with this motor.

http://www.mwm.com.br/site/ing/produtos.asp?idp=17

It needs a new starter motor, which is not cheap.
Motor is OK,
had injectors done 2yr back
Body is good and straight.
Hard fibreglass cover on back in good condition.

It would suit me for a towing vehicle - is set up for it actually.
If it proves reliable, then wonder if these old trucks are ever 'done up'?

Has any one ever owned one of these, specifically with this Diesel in it.
Any comment.

Cheers
Phillip

Never heard of them, As for the body I think pre 72 was tougher.

I had an old 1972 ford pickup truck. It was a good old truck but had a gas engine, I wouldn’t be afraid of that one with that old corn binder diesel in it. Should last you for some time. Them old engines last for ever when given proper maintance.

Great concise statement Flathead. Now why do you say that? Have you knowledge that can assist me. If so, I need to hear it, good/bad/indifferent.
Thanks
Cheers
Phillip

Folks had one of these when I was a kid. It had a weak six cylinder and was two wheel drive. I still see them around here from time to time. Pretty simple rig that is starting to become a collector item now.

Re: Ford Pick-up trucks

Well, I bought the truck. 1975 Model. AUD$500.Seller was my worker John, (mechanic)

There is a bit of rust, mainly on the top-side of syle-side where fibreglass camper cover fits on. Couple of small holes in the bonnet, work on one tail light area. Rear guards in well are heavily dented. LH Grille broken around light.
Probably find a lot more as we progress....that's expected. John says it is straight, little rust, easy to do.

It runs, and is registered.....
Not sure how to explain the sound. Not like a V8, but certainly a nice 'thump'.

Getting the guy from Motor-ese Diesel out. He wants to see it because of its motor.
Will discuss with him options on new starter motor....do I leave the diesel in it or not etc, power steer, auto trans etc.
John is keen to do it up.
Will fit in well around here. Give him something to do when we have quiet moments. Says he can handle everything except upholstery and top coat of paint, but has his nephew lined up for that.

Hoping it will clean up real well. Don't want to rod it, just make it look 'real nice' and drive it.
This project is a bit like your pontoons Aldo...creative accounting so to speak.

Questions to every one.

Any suggestions (yes I remember your thoughts Flathead...but you didn't get back)
What colour.
Anything.
Lets hear it.
As you have gathered, I have a habit of doing things when I set my mind to it.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Ford Pick-up trucks

Those are very tough vehicles, quite bullet-proof. I'm sure with a little care you will get many more miles out of it. Why is the steering wheel on the wrong side? ;)

Do those backwards type vehicles shift differntly too? I mean...do you start shifting from the right and go to the left? Often wondered about that.

EDIT: Which foot pushes the gas pedal?

Dunno about Oz or NZ although I suspect they're the same as us in the UK but our gears work from left to right as you sit on the drivers seat.
Gas pedal is operated by the right foot.

I love it... never seen one with kangaroo bars on the front though lol.

I have a 77 f250 with a gas guzzeling 460 in it. Could pull a house off its foundation.

Lots of parts at jcwhitney.com if your needing a source anytime. :)

Re: Ford Pick-up trucks

Pleased to see we have decided which side of the road the Canary flies on.....
Thanks for the link Wimperdink.
Have you done your F250 up, or is it pretty much as it came off the lot? Does yours have the chrone or like mine?
I have been thru the web trying to find pictures/ideas, but surprisingly haven't come up with a lot. That's why I am asking here on the forum.
John reckons keep the Roo-Bar on. I am not too sure.
We will make a start on cleaning it up to undercoat stage, but while doing that, think hard on what the finished product will look like.
The 'thinking' may prove harder than the actual work.
Cheers
Phillip

Mine though mechanically brand new, looks like 29 years after it rolled off the lot and cross country a few times... did 25 years of farm duty and ended up as a tow vehicle for me :) ... Mine has a lot of chrome but the bed is shot... front is straight and needs paint bad. I'd say keep the roo bar but thats only cause I like it and dont have the option to get one. :)

Re: Ford Pick-up trucks

cool truck
I had a 72 F250 with a 390 like that only they assembeled mine with the steering colum on the correct side . no power steering was a monster, especially in sand with 10 pounds of air in the tires.
we dont see the diesel version in trucks that age.
get us some engine box pics.
mine was 4WD and in low range and low gear it would pull medium sized pine trees over :)
my "Roo" bar was a piece of ship frame 14"x1/2 channel. that was also the front bumber :)

I'd paint it primer gray. ;) And no hubcaps. Put a roll bar in it and a thick plank of wood for a tailgate and she's set!

Good luck with your new truck, Phil. Some of that vintage were built in this country with an IH six 282 or the like. If you need any spare parts let me know. :D
