Have a ford 351 that I need to pull. Have an omc lower unit. It is the style that the lower unit goes through the hull and is sealed with a rubber boot - not sure what style you call that....

Talking with a guy I know, he said just disconnect ( un-bolt ) the bell-housing from the engine and un-bolt an inspection plate. Leave the bell-housing with gear box and lower unit all intact and in the boat, un-bolt the front motor mounts and wiggle the engine forward and out....

The bell-housing actually has the back motor mounts.......

Does this sound right ??? The starter is bolted to the bell-housing so I assume I'll need to pull that out first.....

I am also going to have to mess with the lower unit lift cause It will not go down.......:grumpy:

You have one of the OMC stringer mount outdrives. There were three basic varieties, depending on the year. Yes, you can pull the motor without pulling the drive and you do not need to lower the drive to do that. In fact, with the drive up I would fashion some kind of brace down to the trailer. Otherwise once you pull the motor, the weight of the outdrive and intermediate housing will stress the rear mount bolts and put undo downward pressure on the transom boot. I'd advise not driving to far with the motor out and the outdrive still attached, but solid bracing of the outdrive would remedy that.

There is no 'inspection' plate you need to remove but I you do need to remove the starter. Once all the bell housing bolts are removed, if you have any resistance separating the motor, it will most likely be rust in the IH splined shaft and coupler bolted to the flywheel. You want to carefully inspect the splines in that coupler as on older units they are pretty small and prone to wear. Later stringers used a beefier spline.

Having the motor out will make it easier to access and remove the tilt motor for testing or replacement.

How would it fall out ? The two back motor mount bolts will still be there and bolted to the drive ?

if you take the drive off, are you talking about the out drive, then take the gear box and bell-housing out while still attached to the motor ?

I could ratchet strap it to the top of the transom......

That'll work! Just don't pay too much attention to Bondo. He is a grump when it comes to anything white.

Just paint yours black and Bondo would jump in with both feet and with elbows flying, with his eyes closed. He'd probably never notice the difference. :surprise:
