what is the deal with force engines? why are they so bad why do they have such a bad rap? what actually is bad about them from other engines?

You probably just opened a huge can of worms with this question. There are lots of opinions about it. My observation is that they require a lot of maintainance, and failure to do so will result in break downs. There are probably many reasons for the bad rap, but one theory I have is that the combination of Bayliner and Force created an inexpensive boat, but many of the people that could afford it were younger people who didn't maintain the way it needed.<br /><br />On the other hand, I have a 1986 Force that has been properly maintained and it runs great.<br /><br />All things considered, I would not buy another one. I would probably buy a Johnson/Evinrude or a Yamaha.

Well maintained Force engines are fairly reliable, but:<br /><br />They were obsolete technology by the mid 80s. They can't meet current emissions limits.<br /><br />Parts are hard and getting harder to find. They are no longer built or supported by Brunswick.<br /><br />Very few, if any, were rated at the propshaft. Most, I think, were rated at the flywheel/crank.<br /><br />On the other hand, they are cheap compared to the more popular used engines.<br /><br />If you would like a Yugo you would like a Force.

hum, maybe i should just get rid of it then, i mean the boat is awsome but if i am gonna have this many problems then maybe its time to go, can i by chance substitute another power head for the force one?

Force/Chryslers can be reliable- mine was thirty years old when I overheated it and ruined one of the pistons- Main thing is do not overheat them! Make sure you have a good impeller and clean lower unit oil and you should be fine- If it runs good and you like it I'd say keep it.

My dad calls Force The "EDSEL" of outboards.<br />He even went through the trouble of bringing me his old Edsel standing E off his 1960 Ranger, to put on rear of the cowling....sheesh!!<br />Everytime I go to the lake or river all I get is stares, seeing people with all the new motors and boats, and them asking what kind of motor is that? Well its a Force you dummy!!! <br />What really made my day was loading the boat up next to a new center console with a huge new behemeth 225 motor....and my live well was full, and there"s was dry....ha!!!<br /><br /><br />petey....<br />1990 50 Hp "US Marine" Force.<br />15.9 Ft Spectrum Alm Bass Boat, Tube pullin moefoe<br />

Common parts are still pretty readily available for the larger models like your 125HP motor. If you've got one of the small ones like a 5 HP, for the most part you'd find yourself SOL though.
