Force won't run in lake

I have a 1993 Force 90HP. It will run like a top with the water hose hooked to it but when I put it in the lake it will not go. It will idle for a while but when throttled up it will bog down and die. <br /><br />I know it needs an impeller in the water pump, could that be the only problem?

Check the compression. You may not have enough compression to force exhaust out of the lower leg in the lake. Try running it in a barrel or trash can to see if it does the same as in the lake.

to rule out compression problem, you could also pick up a compression tester from napa or sears as this would greatly help to isolate or rule out problems. if compressionloss, could be as small as a failed head gasket or much larger (read expensive) problems...if compression related.
