I have a 1990?(serial # 906x90c) 90hp force outboard. I had it in the water for about 90 minutes and it stalled (stopped dead in the water) at while going about 30 mph. I was able to restart the motor, but it didn't have any power. I was able to make it back to the dock @ about 5 MPH. Any help will be appreciated.

How long did you have to wait to get it started again after it crapped out? The reason I ask is that if you had to wait an hour or more I would suspect your motor overheated and shut down. However if you started it right back up and lost most of your power I would start with testing for spark and compression. Sounds like you lost at least one cylinder.

It started up after about 3 to 5 minutes. Is it very difficult to repair if it is a cylinder? I purchased this boat from a dealer last summer. the first time I put it on the water last summer, it did the same thing. they said the top cylinder was bad, and had to replace the piston. That cost me $1600.00. Is it worth to repair this motor?

What is, and how do you do a spark test??

Re: Force outboard motor stalled

There are a couple of ways to do it. You can buy a spark tester from an autozone or other car parts place. You can stick a 3/4 inch screw and try and jump the spark to a metal ground while it is hooked up to the spark plug wire or you can ground out the tip of the spark plug with the wire attached and look at the spark while someone cranks the motor.

Main thing is you want a blue spark on each cylinder and the plug should be able to jump about 3/8 inch if using a bolt.

Re: Force outboard motor stalled

Ok, I did the sparktest and all cylinders are firing. One thing I did find was that the sensor?( biege/tan wire) that comes out of the motor block marked over heat sensor according to the diagram)was not connected. When I reconnected the wire, the motor starts and accellerates when I put the it in high idle and shift to drive. Would this have caused the problem? Also, would this have caused the motor from only going 5to10MPH after I started it the first time it stalled? Or do I still have a problem somewhere?

On that motor, the overheat sensor is just that, a heat activated switch connected to a buzzer.

Thanks Roscoe,
I understand what the sensor is there for, but can you help me with the rest of my question?
