Force Air Cleaner

I picked up a 1988 Force 50 HP outboard and, after removing the cover, noticed there was no air cleaner. Does anyone know where to get a replacemet?

Welcome to iboats Joe.<br /><br />Outboards do not have air cleaners.<br />Some makes and models use an intake box or carburator cover, designed to reduce engine noise. They are not needed and are pretty much useless.<br />Don't know if your motor came with one, or where you would find a replacement, but you could ask at a Merc dealer.

Joe:<br />I've got the same motor. There is no intake box or carburetor cover. When you think about it, it makes sense because you are operating the motor in almost dust-free conditions out on the water.

I have a 1989, no filter....straight air intake through the back of the cowling.<br />As old as these motors are, do yourself a favor and peel and scrape the foam from the inside of the cowling....cover....If you inspect the foam closely...it does not take much to peel off.<br />I had a problems picking up bits of black foam in the carb from time to time. Just peel it out and scrape.....<br />I even fashioned a screen to fit into the rear of the cover were the air gets sucked in, to eliminate the possibility of picking up any unwanted debris. Simple window screen, stuffed into the opening.<br />Good luck.....jas....peteypug.
