O.K. here is my problem. I have a hard time getting my motor to start. when I can get it to start it wants to back fire and die. I can start it in gear and at about 1/2 speed to all the way open it runs fine. As soon as I back it off it sputters back fires, and dies. I have Changed spark plugs. Any help would be great.

Re: Force 85hp timing?

The timing is different for the different model years, as they changed the ignition systems. What year is your Force?
I would do a compression test, before and after a decarb job. The reason for this is cylinder compression (of course) and reed seal. If the reeds aren't closing properly, it will spit, backfire and cuss up a storm.

12 footer is headin in the right direction...a loss of compression will make these motors run EXACTLY like you describe....timing doesnt just 'change' on these motors, so dont bother screwin with it...

The motor year is 1985. And on the compresion test do you crank it for 6 rotation like on a car? thank you.

Compression numbers look good. How old is the fuel?

Re: Force 85hp timing?

The compression is good.
Timing is the primary thing to look at. Check for any play in all timing linkage..
A half inch here,a qaurter inch there, and it'll run like poo.
but a leaky ignition switch can cause this (arching accross the stator ground terminal).
Weak armature magnets can cause this.
Spark plugs should be UL18V If they are champs (reccommeded).
Check plugs after a test run to look for signs of water lastly. I doubt this one due to the compression test passing. But, like the Florida Lottery, "ya never know".

Re: Force 85hp timing?

12footer my spark plugs are UL18V. question,I was taring down the exsaust side of motor and found one twisted off bolt. also when I got the side plate off a lot of carbon. cleaned with seafoam. also I took off the intake plates (3 of them)and someone had taken these off before ruined the gasket and used rtv silicon (and a poor job of it)they squeezed a lot of it out and there were gaps in rtv could this be causing my problem? MILKMAN have you ever taken off intake plates?
