Yes TwoFish you can check/clean the check valves without removing them. To test, simply attach a piece of hose to the check valve and blow/suck. Air should only flow in one direction. Can't remember which direction. I think the air flow goes from the check valve towards the by-pass covers, so you should be able to suck air, but not blow into it.

ok i have finally got around to changing my exhaust gasket.. and it seems to have fixed my problems.. the gasket swap went very smooth. all of the bolts came out easily except the bottom one it was a little harder to get out but with a custom bent wrench i got it. the hardest part of all of it was scraping off the old gasket. i could not move the lower cowl so it was kinda tight but with a little patience it comes off.. thank you for all of your held in my repairs

Good new that you could get the exhaust plate off without removing the powerhead. I’m still chasing a miss in my engine so this is now an easier option to pursue thanks to your efforts.
