I just bought a 17 trophy (94) w/ a force 70 that I'm assuming is also a 70. The prop is extremely worn and looks awfully small for the motor. I want to change props but I am having difficulty getting the prop off of the shaft. It looks like it's been on there a long time. Is there any problem with putting some heat to the shaft?hub area to free it up? Or will that damage any seals etc in the lower unit?

Yes the next step is hammer ,W-40, heat etc. I suggest you get your next prop before you start. That decission will take a while and a lot of research. Meanwhile the old prop still works!

Re: Force 70 Prop

The Force 70 was made from 1991-95. I'd try to avoid heat if possible. Use a prop puller and penetrating oil. There are 2 seals on the rear of the shaft that you'd probably cook if you got torch-happy. Is it a salt water motor? I've had to cut props off before that were frozen on. Corrosion makes a dang nice weld sometimes!

NE1 else want to weigh in. So far it looks like a split decision. Yes it's a salt water motor.

That prop has a pin thru it, dont it?
Fouled Plug is right about the heat. It will ruin your shaft seal, and could even ignite the oil inside.
Pentrating oil and a good prop puller is the safest (and only way). And even then, the puller may leave the hub on the spilne! If so, you will have to carefully cut it off with a dremmel or high speed disc cutter.

Nope. No pin. That's on a different model. Looks like I'm going to have to take it in to the shop ( I hate doing that). I've been hitting it with PB Baster all day to no avail. Talked to my mechanic and he said there may be no way of getting it off without destroying it also. Oh well. Looks like it's the wrong prop anyway. Should be a 10.25 diameter I think but it's only about 9".

Thanks for the help guys.
