Hows it going?
I'm new to the boating world and I'm eager to start learning. I recently received a Bayliner Capri (I have no idea what year it is, i'm guessing late 80s) and it has a force 50 motor.

To my eye the motor looks clean, although i remember many years ago it had trouble starting. So, my question is: are there any things in particular I should inspect to see if the motor is good or will run? Have any advice, or do you know of any great sites where I can find answers?

I appreciate your time, and thanks!

Your question is too general to offer any specific answers, xEx.

I think the first thing you need to do is get a Service Manual. You will need to know the model year to do that.

After you get the Manual, do "Awakening a sleeping outboard" in the Engine FAQs forum.

By then you will either have a good running engine or some specific questions.

We will be here for you, and welcome to iboats. :)

Your motor is a 1986.
Not a bad motor is maintained and adjusted properly.

It will however, be a bit underpowered, even if the Capri is a 14 footer.
Don't expect great performance out of her.
But if it is in good shape, it should be reliable.

First things first.
New gas and oil.
do a compression test.
check for spark.
