Hi everyone, I'm officially new to the forum, although I've been reading posts from Iboats for a long time. The reason I'm posting this is because I bought a 1991 Force 2 cylinders 50 HP model number 507F91B. The prior owner said that it quit on him in the middle of the lake, he bought a new outboards and didn't bother to get a diagnosis on this one. Looking at it I noticed burns on the rectifier and on the stator, which has 6 wires that feed the dual CD ignition system. I know the rectifier is kaput but I need to test the expensive stator. It looks very clean, except for a burn between 2 of the thin wired coils, which spells bad news. Thanks for your input

outboardignitiondtcom has test procedures for your motor.
You'll need an analog type meter to do the basic tests.
The more complicated needs a DVA or Peak Reading Volt Meter or an attachment to make your meter read DVA.
A burn spot doesn't necessarily mean it's bad???

Thanks Jerry, I want to add that the engine has a black coil and a blue coil, seems as though they were playing with it previously, installed a new stator and connected it wrong, which fried both the stator and the rectifier. The stator looks like a new one, save for that burn, most likely it is fried.

I can only see one CDI, the darker blue box IMG_20210526_072543.jpgbelow the two coils, although the black coil has the marking that reads "CD", is this a dual CDI or single CDI ignition?

I was also reading some posts about swapping to a Mercury CDM ignition, since I'm in for a new stator anyway, this may be another solution. However, the thread does not specify which engine they did the swap on. A pic of the coil plate shows 3 coils, so it must have been a triple cylinder. here is the thread
