Regarding an engine I am considering purchasing..looking at it running with the earmuffs and waterhose run-setup, and noting other related posts, this is what I see AFTER the engine is cut off and the last water runs out...

Is it normal for there to be a milky-brown liquid discharge from the lower unit directly adjacent to one of the upward-facing, vertical assembly bolts? The hole from which the liquid is coming does not seem to be a factory bore, but an assymetrical hole, and emits what seems to be water and oil mix with steam or smoke..... (?)

Any techs out there who may shed some light on this ?

Hi,
Check the lower unit oil to see if it's got water in it,take the vent and fill screws out and pump some gear oil in there,if what comes out of the vent hole is milky or has blobs of water in it the motor will need a bottom end seal kit fitting, which isn't a bad job to do.
If the motor is on a boat get a test run as these and other problems will show up after a good run.
Good luck

How do I go about replacing the seals on a 1974 75 HP Chrysler? Does the entire gear assembly need to be taken apart and reshimmed? Thanks in advance.

No, Speed. You just need the seal kit, impeller, and the manual. The only other things you'll need are the proper tools, some gear lube, and maybee a bicycle air pump with gauge (to pressure-test).
It's pretty much a normal lower unit.

Inquizito, as ODDD1 says, it's totally normal. But do drain the lower unit into a pan to make sure it is clean and no leaks.

Check this out..........
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=011919

Re: Force 50 hp '87 milky brown liquid discharge

Thanks 12 footer. I have the manual but it does not do a good job of explaining what needs to be done to replace the seals only. It looks as if the prop shaft and gear assembly has to be removed to get at all of the seals. How far into the lower unit do I needd to go to replace the pertinent seals?

To replace seals only, remove the lower unit, making sure to mark the shift shaft linkage (you'll want to make sure it's returned to the same spot when done).

You will also want to replace the impeller (there is no scense in changing the seals underneath it,without replacing the impeller). Impellers last only a couple years normally.

You'll need a puller, ither a store-bought one, or one you make out of an old screwdriver.

There is one seal under the impeller housing, one on top...One at the shift shaft, and two at the prop shaft.

You don't have to remove the gear train to replace the propshaft seal, iether. You don't even need to remove the lower unit,if the only bad seal is the propshaft seal. Simply remove the prop, remove the two hex-head screws in the bearing carrier, remove the bearing carrier, replace the O-=ring (outer) and the shaft seal (inner).Replace bearing carrier, replace prop.

So my best advice would be to determine which seal(s) has failed, by 10PSI air into the vent or fill screw hole, l/u in a garbage can full of water, and look for where the bubbles come out. That is the seal(s) that is bad.

That certainly doesn't sound bad at all. The lower unit section in the manual could use a separate section outlining a "seal-only" replacemnt procedure. Thanks for your time in explaing this.
