If it is an intermitent miss, I would look to the ignition system. Check all sparkplug wires to verify you are getting spark. You could have a bad coil or two, which fail when they heat up. Or a bad switchbox.

Stator creates dc voltage, trigger sends it to switchbox, switchbox sends it to coils, coils send it to the sparkplugs.

Did you by chance put new plug wires on the motor?
They need to be solid wire core, not the polycarbonate automobile type.

Not talking about the key switch.

The 1989 thru 1991A model 150 had the Prestolite ignition. The stator produces current and sends it to the "CD module" (power pack), you should have 3 of these.
Then the trigger sends a low voltage signal to the "CD module" which causes the module to send the stored energy to the coil.

You could have a defective trigger, missing magnet on the flywheel, bad CD module, or just a bad wire. If you are going to test these parts, you are going to need a repair manual, as the testing procedures are beyond my scope of knowledge.

The 1991"B" thru 1994 models (Thunderbolt ignition), replaced the 3 CD modules with a single switchbox.

I hope this helps.

Re: force 5 cyl 150hp

Black/yellow wires that connect to the "M" and "M" terminals on the key switch are supposed to connect and ground the ignition when the key is off. One of the wires may have a break or it may not be properly grounded at the motor end.

A contributing factor may be the carb(s), not closing all the way and providing air/fuel flow to the engine.

Snuff the motor to stop it, by putting rag or cardboard over the carbs. DO NOT pull the battery cable as this can/will blow the rectifier.

Re: force 5 cyl 150hp

It sounds like the harness has some connection issues at the powerhead end of things. Did you use the correct screws when reattaching the harness after poerhead reinstall? A harness wire screw that is in too deep will arc to the block behind the harness bracket. Also, check to make sure you did not crack the black plastic harnessing block. A crack from over-tightening will allow the short as well.
As far as it not shutting off, etc. You may even have it hooked up incorrectly. Easy way to tell? Disconnect your ignition switch harness completely. Start the motor from the back using a jump gun with alligator clips. Both clips will be attached to the starter solenoid. One will go on the large terminal where the battery is connected. The other will go on the small terminal with the yellow start wire attached.
Run it for a while without the harness attached at all. Jump up in the boat and go the gears, rev up, rev down, etc. Does it have the same problem?
(You will need to manually choke the carbs to kill the motor.) Just take the black flash suppressors off before your test and then cover them with a folded towel when you are ready to kill her.
