I am new to this engine and still learning so bear with me. The other day while out on the water, i was going along just fine when the engine just cut out after running just fine all day and the day before. I opened the lid and there was a lot of excess fuel pooling up in the carb. I figured i fouled the plugs and also flooded it out. I pulled the top spark plug (cleaned it) and held it against the head (bare medal) to see if i had spark and had nothing. Where should i go from here. I drained the carb float, cleaned the plugs, fuel is new, kill switch i checked, in neutral. It cranks just fine, but not even a sputter. Its probably something dumb, any suggestions? thanks.

Re: Force 40hp starting problem

Could be the pickup tube inside the carb. Like a straw in a soda bottle, it draws-up the fuel from the bowl. On the other end is a jet. The openings on the tube and jet are TINY. If this motor sat with fuel in it for a year or more, chances are good that these orifices are full of varnish. The leaking fuel gives you a clue, as this varnish can cause the float/float needle to stick.
You will need as manual ,a rebuild kit and a can of good carb cleaner. and re-trace your steps. Also, it is adviseable to put a new diaphram in the fuel pump, because it was not origanlly designed to handle ethenol-laced fuels.
It's been a few moons since i've messed with a Force carb, but the carb kit was abt 25bucks, and the fuel pump kit was around 15.

Re: Force 40hp starting problem

Thanks for the input, I will look around for carb and fuel pump rebuild kits, i did however take the bowl off the bottom of the carb to see if it was sticking which it appeared not to be, i was kinda hoping thats all it was but apparently not  fuel did sit in it for a good time though, but i drained it all from the tank and added fresh, i had the boat out about 3 weekends in a row and then all of a sudden this, could it still be the carb and or pump? thanks

Re: Force 40hp starting problem

If that is a magneto ignition engine, pull off the flywheel and check the points. Pitted points or improperly gapped ones will cause a no spark condition. All 2 cylinder points engines are set to .020 gap. If it is not a magneto ignition engine, check for bad grounds.

Re: Force 40hp starting problem

I attempted to do a test on the stator and this is what i found, i disconnected the two wires from the stator (purple and white) connected the red side of my volt meter to one wire at a time while the black was on a good ground, set multimeter to ohms, and cranked the engine over, i had no readings at all on either wire i tested, does this mean the stator has gone bad, i deffinately have no spark at all on either cylinder, before i pull the flywheel etc. are there any other suggestions? thanks all

Well it turns out that i was testing the trigger:rolleyes:, does anyone know the correct way to test the stator?
