I am looking at a rig with a 1994 40 hp Force outboard. The guy says the engine is low hours and runs perfectly.I agree that it looks very good and evidently has been maintained well.He has agreed to let me take it to the lake and try it before any money changes hands. He also told me the starter mounts had been broken and welded. He said the welder did a good job and that he reinforced the starter so it would not break again.Has anyone had this happen before and did the repairs hold up?. I also would like to here your opinons on this engine and also on replacement parts availability.

Re: Force 40 hp

The '94 Force 40hp is still the old old design, has exhaust snout, not thru the hub exhaust. Old ignition. This motor did not get the Mercury upgrades. It is an old Chrysler except for the cosmetics. It would probably be underpowered on any boat weighing over 450lbs. Overall, a poor engine.

Can't tell if an engine has been well maintained by looking at it, only if it was kept clean on the outside.

You need a long test drive.
Load the boat with several people when you test it, to simulate the load you will be using it with.
A compression test.
A close inspection of the gearcase oil, after the test drive.
Thorough test of the tilt n trim.

Then you need to hope the rings aren't stuck.
Replace the water pump.
And DECARB.

Some parts are available, some are hard to find.

The engine is only worth about $400, regardless of condition. It is worth more if you part it out on ebay.

Keep looking, spring is around the corner, and there will be many more boats for sale.
