im new to boating and on my second time out i wasnt paying attention and went into to shallow water. sucked sand into my intake. about 2 min later engine died and had somke come from under the cowl. and now it turns over but real slowish but it wont fire up. now i know that the water pump is shot. no question about that. when i turn the fly wheel by hand its fine except in one spot it gets real stiff and hard to turn. i know its not the gear case. i took it off and it does the same things. i also notice that the area were the plugs go into the engine it looks like it was burnt. any ideas were to even start. i dont want to pay $60/h to some one to fix something that maybe i can fix my self.

thanks

sure, you should take a compression test on each cylinder of the motor.
test results should show compression with in 20% of each other. sounds like you may have some problems.
get a service manual off ebay or elsewhere for your motor.

yup you can do these checks without spending money on a mechanic....just spend $30 on a compression tester from autozone/walmart and see if you blew a cylinder....any cylinder under 90 psi is bad...at that point you could take off head and check your gasket......if compression is good buy a spark tester and check for spark.

As Javsam and Kajun stated, you have some work to do. First of all is to get yourself a service manual (Clymers or Seloc although I prefer the Manufactures service manual). This will give all the procedures you will need to correct this problem. I don't think you've done much damage but it doesn't take alot to muck things up. Start with a back flush of the cooling system and you will need to replace the water pump impeller and maybe the entire water pump assembly. An inspection will yield your answer as to what needs to be replaced. While you are tearing down the lower unit to get at the WP. Spray the inside of the cylinders and the inside of the carb down with a generous portion of Seafoam Deep Creep. Perform the decarb procedure as recommended in th FAQ portion of this forum. When you finish replacing the WP you will need to perform a compression test on all the cylinders. If your compression test yields the recommended psi, thank davey jones and consider this a lesson learned. Watch were you are going at all times! If not, your purchased service manual is going to earn it's keep!
