This weekend a friends 95 Force outboard experienced an engine fire. It appears that the ignition module heated up and disentegrated. The module itself was almost completely metlted away and some of the wires to the module and the coils were damaged. There is a 20 amp fuse in the harness next to where the module was that did not blow and was still intact. Has anyone else experienced this or know what might have caused it. We plan to change the unit and harness but do not want to have the same problem occur. Thanks for any help.

Re: Force 120 Engine Fire

Before doing that, run a compression test. I've heard of motors overheating due to cooling system malfunction to the point of catching the paint on fire. Just a guess there. But whatever the cause of the fire (carb overflow hitting ignition, overheat, ect), good compression numbers are critical as to whether he should repair it or part it out.
