What a great forum! I continue to learn more everyday...

I have owned, used, & maintained outboards all of my adult life, but I've never heard of the term "fogging your motor". I have gathered that it is some sort of process for de-carboning the powerhead, but how? Is it something I can do myself? If so, what are some of the products to be used?

Re: Fogging?

You are right on the mark. "Fogging" is the term widely used for the practice of de-carbonizing the internals of 2cycle outboards.
It can be administered in a fuel additive, such as OMC's "Seafoam", or as an aerosol spray, which is sprayed directly into the carb once or twice a year (dependng on individual operating habits). Products like
ValvTect's "Outboard decarb cleaner" are in this category.
I've heard of some motors that have fittings on the intake expressly for the fogging part of the winterizing ritual, but I've never seen one. According to what I've read, the can of fogging oil is scewed-onto this fitting, in much the same manner as a tire pump on a valve stem. The engine is started on the fogging oil,and run until the can empties.
I personally like the spray type,as my particular engines don't perform well with any type of additives.
I decarb them twice a year. It's easy to use.
You merely start the motor, spray the cleaner into the intake of the carb at fast idle. It'll smoke like a Florida forest in February. Just before the can is empty, allow the product to stall the engine out. Let it sit 20 minutes, and restart. The smoke will quit after a few minutes. You may want to have a spare set of plugs on-hand because the stuff has a tendancy to glom them up pretty bad.
