Fogging thru carburetor

I just finished winterizing two merc 4.3 I/Os by pumping antifreeze through earmuffs.
Next, I was fogging through the carburetors for 45 seconds before I ran out of antifreeze and had to shut them off.
Now I’m wondering if I got enough of the fogging oil into the cylinders because I’ve read that you keep spraying until the engine dies?

Did you drain the block, heads and manifolds first? If not, your exhaust has antifreeze, but your block has water

As Scott politely said, the fogging is not an issue, after your block cracks.

Fogging 4 cycle motors is nice, but not a necessity. If it bothers you, pull the spark plugs and give the cylinders a blast of fogging oil.

If your block was not drained before running on the muffs/antifreeze, I would recommend you pull the engine and manifold plugs, poke out the holes and let it drain. I always filled the block with full strength antifreeze after draining it. I would capture the antifreeze in the spring, for reuse next winter. That was how I chose to winterize, but some leave the block dry.

Fogging for 45 seconds is fine. Often the engine does not die.

Taking AF in trough the muffs can be a bit questionable, if you did not drain the existing water from the block and manifolds.

I warmed up the engines so thermostats would open. Next I pumped 10 gallons of AF per engine thru the muffs. I did not drain the engine through the block and plugs beforehand though. I pulled an exhaust manifold hose afterward and the scalding water was pink.
Do I need to go back, open the block and manifold plugs, drain until dry and leave open until spring,
OR
Drain what I put in already, close plugs and refill with new pure AF?

As a minimum you need to pull the engine and manifold plugs and poke the drains. You can catch the antifreeze for further use, although, not knowing it strength makes it difficult to use. I would use it to flush out the drains, if it has good color. A cup or two into each hose and watch for it to emerge at the drains, water intake on the OD and exhaust gratings.

I always fill the motor with straight A-F. I would use new A-F for this, if you decide to do it. Grease the steering rod in the bilge, the grease fittings, pull the prop and grease the propshaft. clean the spark arrestor, hose off the block and spray with corrosion guard. You did drain and refilll the gearcase using new plug gaskets, right?

Your thermostats slammed shut the instant the antifreeze got to them.

You simply pumped all 10 gallons out your exhaust. Your block is still water
Do I need to go back, open the block and manifold plugs, drain until dry and leave open until spring,
OR
Drain what I put in already, close plugs and refill with new pure AF?
It is your choice. Drain the water you didn't drain

Or buy two new motors in spring

Read the factory manual on what it says about draining and the optional use of antifreeze

Didn't catch your location. Nothing but air in the system is a safer bet..

In both Merc & even my old OMC shop manual it plainly tells you how to drain and use AF. Doing it that way 20 years not one problem

Yep and that's what I would do if my boat was in the north and in the salt. My boat is in the TN river. Your help with my elbows was special, they were 35 years old and rusted to nothing and honestly the mani's are pretty close to done.
But to be honest I think feeding AF into the system will work most of the time in TN..

Lol I will probably replace my elbows at the end of next season (5 years in Long Island salt water); the manifolds might be ok to use beyond that, or not…
It’s actually easier to manually drain & back fill with AF than trying to suck it up the drive….
