Flywheel ringing.

My '94 Johnson 2-stroke 4 HP DeLuxe has a very small ringing noise that can be heard when the motor cover is off. Maybe 1 ring per 10 revolutions. Same tone when lightly tapped with small screwdriver on stopped flywheel. Should I remove flywheel and inspect now, or can I wait until winter?

I think that is called resonance. I think I would leave it alone.

Re: Flywheel ringing.

I think you are right R.J.. I removed the flywheel and closely inspected the flywheel, coil, ignition module and ignition plate. There was no sign of rubbing or contact; no shiny spots. I guess the flywheel just rings. Fortunately it cannot be heard with the motor cover in place. But I had to find out that nothing was going to fail out on the water.
