I posted last weekend about pulling a flywheel off. I was able to get the flywheel off and found that 2 of the magnets had broken. I called around and heard the samething that "Force flywheels are known for this". I am currently looking for a replacement and I am hesistant to buy a used flywheel, thinking that I will just be buying the same problem again. I assume that the new flywheels have since been built better, would anyone agree to this. Seeing that a new one over $400+ I hope this will be the cure. Has anyone come across this issue with there Force motor. I have 1996 90hp 2 stroke 3 cylinder Force by Mercury Marine.

Mine was a single continuous magnetic strip not individual magnets, it did fall out when I removed the flywheel, I just glued it back in.

Yep, '94 Force 90HP flywheel magnets broke. I came up with a used one off a '94 120HP (same flywheel). It looked much better than mine, but mine was run in saltwater. I'm just trying to get by 'til I can replace the whole engine.

Are the magnets broken, or have they just come away from the flywheel?

Re: Flywheel replacement/magnets

Two of the six magnets broke off. I was able to get a new flywheel and installed this past Tuesday. Only issue was the key on the shaft broke and the flywheel spun and caused markings in the inside of the flywheel that sits on the shaft. I put all back together and boat started and ran. My only concern now is...should I have pulled the flywheel off and tried to file down where the broken key rubbed on the flywheel or just leave alone.
