I need to replace the flywheel or the ring gear on my 1993 Crownline 196br. 5.7L 350 w/alpha one setup.
My question is, what part # is the correct one for the flywheel and should I change entire flywheel or just the ring gear? Additionally, is there any way to do this without pulling the motor? Do I need to pull the drive as well?
Thanks in advance!

change just the ring gear ,and yes to removing the drive first, then the motor, rear housing cover, engine coupler, then flywheel.
Drive old ring gear off, heat new ring gear with high heat, then just SLIP in onto the flywheel, let cool, reassemble

Your choice, spend $80 for a GM flywheel or spend $15 on a new ring gear. Most likely in stock at napa. There are two ring gears available. 153 tooth for a flywheel for 12-3/4 diameter flywheel or 168 tooth for 14" diameter

Thanks Bt Doctur,
Are there any other parts that I should replace while I have the boat this tore down? (Water pump, engine coupler, etc)
How do I determine the correct ring gear to purchase?

Thanks Scott, I am pretty sure it is the 14" wheel. Will doube check. The number stamped on the cast is 14091599.
Thanks again Bt Doctur, just saw your reply.

Now, my engine hoist is not tall enough for this job. Any recommendations to make this as smooth a job as practical?

flywheel assembly number is10105832 (casting number for the flywheel is 14091599N. its a 1986 up 14" cast GM flywheel.... found behind any 1986 or later 4.3, 5.0, or 5.7 motor with a manual clutch.

pull the wheels on your trailer, run the hubs on 2x6's.... you just gained 6"-10"

On pulling the motor, you do not need to pull the motor out of the boat, just unbolt and lift enough to move the engine forward enough to reach the flywheel bolts. When you get the motor back in place you will need an alignment tool to realign the motor and outdrive. Have you had the outdrive off before? If not I would do the standard maintenance, check gimbal bearing, lube u-joints and replace the impeller. There a bunch of good U-tube videos on replacing a ring gear. Good luck.

i just did a ring gear, fortunetly i had a spare flywheel but wanted to be fresh so i changed the gear, if you do not have access to high heat source, do this, cut off the old ring gear with a cold chisel, then through the flywheel in the freezer, i left mine overnight, then put the ring geasr in the oven @ 450 degrees for 1/2hr, pull the flywheel out of the freezer, pull the ring gear out of the oven and drop it on the flywheel, making sure it sits flush all the way around. do this outside, on concrete so the hot metal does not damage anything.

Thanks, everyone! I will be tackling this tomorrow and hope it goes smoothly.
Stonyloam, Plan to do the maintenance mentioned as well as water pump since this boat is new to me. Don't know the history of it.
I may have to travel a couple hours from the casa to get my hands on an alignment tool, but I think that I can still do it in a day or 2.
Stang32, thanks for that info. I actually did something similar on ball joints in the past.

Just wanted to update and thank everyone. Swapped the ring gear without much of a snag. Went well. Thanks again!

motor is back in, and I have a new gimbal bearing and impeller to do. Old bearing is out, but having difficulty seating new one. Any tips?

Use the correct tool or you will damage it
