I have the flywheel nut remove. I've got a hormonic balance puller and I cannot get the flywheel to break loose. Any ideas? I have broken 2 pullers on this flywheel.
Evinrude 112 special

Re: Flywheel Removal

Hi there well don't want to say try some heat as you will destroy the seal,a last resort though, the shaft is tapered so you may be able to put tension on the puller and then try tapping the flywheel with a soft faced hammer brass or a dead blow hammer hope this works, a propane torch may work for heating as you do not have to get it red hot just a little heat to warm it up ,,,good luck and let us know how you make out..

I tried taping on it with a rubber mallet, to no avail. I hate to try heat

Re: Flywheel Removal

It may take some time. And I agree with you both, use heat as a last resort, and be prepaired to fix expensive heat related damage.
But get a can of WD40, Liquid Wrench or other penatrant, and fill the flywheel inden up with it. Then go in the house and watch the tube. Check it every 4 hours or so,to make sure there is still some penetrant left in there. It may not penetrate. After a day of soaking, tap the flywheel with the rubber mallet a few times. When the penetrant starts to disapear into the shaft, you'll know it's ready for another try with the puller. I have (on a Merc1150) had to soak it like this for 6 DAYS!! But it does werk.

Hey Karwash,
They can really be tough sometimes. Try penatrating oil followed by an impact wrench on the puller. If no access to impact wrench, try tightening the puller up as far as possible then sharply strike the center bolt of the puller with a hammer. If all else fails, try the heat.
Backlash

I've tried all that has been mentioned. I let it soak since yest. afternoon with WD-40. I've tried the puller and hitting the big bolt with a hammer. I have not tried the heat yet.

Re: Flywheel Removal

All are excellent suggestions. . .
Pry up slightly on the flywheel with a screwdriver or bar and hold it there(just to take up the slight end play) Tighten up the puller as much as you can. Then hit the puller shank, don't be shy, you must give it a good hard square blow with a good sized hammer. Tapping it will just antagonize it!! Its a good idea to leave the crank nut on the crank (just back it off a couple of turns) cause I've had some tight ones jump right off the engine when they broke free

Re: Flywheel Removal

Schematic is right again. The nut left on the shaft will also prevent mushrooming the crank threads too.
Don't use the heat until you break something else, because it will be costly to rebuild.
Be persistant. They can be bugger bears!

Try finding a real puller. The old Johnson Evinrude puller I picked up years ago is like 1" thick plate with a 3/4" fine thread bolt. If set up properly with grade eight bolts an impact gun will rattle it loose.

Re: Flywheel Removal

I'm been having the same problem getting the drive clutch off my snowmobile right now. But I spoke to my uncle (mechanic) and great uncle (too and die maker) and they both strongly recommended this method for flywheel/snowmobile clutch removal on tapered shaft motors:

-do not pry or use flame!

-remove spark plug from piston closest to end of motor with flywheel nand insert 3/16" cotton or nylon rope into cylinder until full (keep one end of rope out of hole so it can be pulled out!)

-this will block piston movement so puller can be tightened as much as possible

-insert puller, tighten,

-give it a couple less than friendly smacks with a 16 oz. (or more) hammer

if it doesn't pop off....

-use heat gun (not flame!!!) with a few quick sweeping motions on the outer perimeter of the flywheel (the heat will transfer to the center bore of the flywheel on its own, so only apply heat to outer flywheel area)

-smack it again

I've seen this done quite well, pay close attention to the heat gun instructions or you could melt the oil seal.

Good luck

dylan

Re: Flywheel Removal

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and ideas. A little bit of all of them is what it took. After screwing with this thing all morning I finally took a rubber mallet and started hitting on the flywheel, all around it. After about 15min it finally let loose.
Thanks again.
Roger
