i have a 1988 invader with a force 125 abd i noticed a pretty good nick in the side of the flywheel,so i have a replacement from ebay and i started to try to switch it and it appears that there must be a secret or two to doing this i tried loosening the nut at the top and am spinning the whole motor should i put the engine in gear so she dont spin freely or is there some specialty tool i should have to do the job?
thanks iboaters

Re: flywheel r and r anyone know how?

Get yourself a crowbar, prybar, or tire iron and wedge it between the teeth of the flywheel and the starter mount as you loosen the nut. Do not wedge between the starter teeth--you will bend the starter shaft.

Alternatively, a strap wrench around the flywheel should hold it. Putting the engine in gear will not hold it.

An impact air gun should also remove the nut quite nicely.

Use a steering wheel puller to remove the old flywheel. Before mounting the new, check the shaft and the socket. be sure there is at least 85% engagement. Torque the flywheel nut to 90 foot pounds or it will kick, breaking the key.

cool, but will this method still work if you dont have an air ratchet or will trying to crank it off by hand will that be too much force on the the starter?

NO! Not the starter. The aluminum motor mounting cast into the block. There are a couple of webs cast into it and a tool will fit in nicely. It will hold against all but the most excessive force. If you have never done it, it helps to have a friend.

I took a small rope put a hook on one end and hooked on of the teeth on the top of the flywheel(not the starter teeth)and tied the other end off on a boat kleet mine took a 3 foot cheater bar on the end of my breaker bar.
Before u put the flywheel back on get a new half moon key.
Good Luck
