I'm trying to get the flywheel off my 1958 evinrude lark so I can change points and condensers. But it won't come off. I got the puller on it now,but it won't pop.Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

Re: flywheel problems

well, in theory oil on flywheel crank interface is a no no..... that said, when i get a really sticky one i have to admit i have been known to use breakfree on the lil bugger then clean it up very well once removed. MY puller is different from most that I see as it allows some flex to the plate that the puller was fabbed from (home made) I generally put it on... tighten it to what i think is good...and walk away... lol it usually pops free in about 3 to 30 minutes.... if not i draw down tighter and then finally break down and use penetrating oil. I have also found gently tapping it when under pressure with something light... hard medium size screwdriver handle (plastic) will accelerate getting it off... the tapping is gentle and just meant to cause vibration not to drive it off. I'll likely be chastised for suggesting the tapping.... I would say DO NOT HIT IT WITH A HAMMER... from my understanding you can crack/break the crankshaft by doing so because it was not designed for sharp sudden loads coming from that direction. Any hard smacks to the flywheel (such as a hammer) can also easily cause it to go out of true/round... this would make you very unhappy.

when you say puller you are using the right style puller and not a three jaw outside puller, but one that pulls from the center bolts correct.

Rattle that center bolt with a air impact wrench. Are you using grade 8 bolts in the puller?

From the oem workshop manual for a 1978 9.9..."To "Pop" the flywheel, use a heavy plastic mallet and tap the top outside diameter of the flywheel or puller. Do not hit the center bolt to remove the flywheel." FWIW....

Re: flywheel problems

Preventing the flywheel from turning, tighten the three retaining puller bolts at tight as possible.

Using a large screwdriver or tool of your choosing, apply pressure "under" the flywheel edge, forcing the flywheel upwards to eliminate the play.

Now, with the biggest hammer in your tool colection, belt the center threaded spindle of that puller straight down. That'll do it.

If you are prying with a screwdriver in one hand, the 16 pounder in your other hand may not be moving that fast...;)

Re: flywheel problems

Well I got it to pop. I put the three bolts thru the ring for the recoil tightened the puller then gave each of the three bolts a quarter turn and it popped off thanks everybody for their suggestions.
