Flywheel Only Turns 3/4

My 96 115hp Johnson made a loud clank and shut off and the flywheel was stuck. I was able to get the flywheel to turn after pulling the spark plugs with a socket but it would only turn 3/4 in each direction and then stop. When I pulled the spark plugs I noticed one of them was smashed shut. Do not believe the spark plug was damaged before install. Any ideas on what could cause this?

Due to the fact one of the spark plugs was smashed shut, pull the heads and take a good look at the cyl's, especially the one with the bad plug.

You mean the one with the broken connecting rod?

Sounds very similar to what happened to me with my 89 Evinrude 120. That cylinder was cooked. Now I am trying to pull the flywheel to tear the engine down. I am reasonably confident that the connecting rod is broken, and at a minimum, I am going to have to bore the cylinder and replace the piston. I can't even get the darn flywheel off. If this first step is any indication of what is to come, man!

You may want to read the BLUE HIGH LITED section at the top of this forum.

Thanks for the info. I will look into the connecting rod and cylinders.
