Flywheel occasionally locks up

1985 150 mariner. Had boat out, got high voltage on battery gauge. Stator fried. Replaced stator, rectifier, and voltage regulator. Tried to start on muffs and after couple tries, the flywheel locked up. Was able to free with socket. Motor started, ran fine for ten minutes. Turned it off for a while, went to start and locked up again. It is hit and miss now. Will start and run fine for several starts, then locks up again. Frees up decently easy with socket on flywheel nut, but occasionally difficult to free up. Where do I need to start? Thanks in advance for any help.

Check to make sure the new stator is not binding first. If that is ok then pull the lower unit off and try it.

New stator not binding. Pulled lower unit and no change. Once I free I hear a slight grinding noise and a little resistance while turning flywheel with socket.

Well, worth tearing into I guess to take a look? All pistons move freely, so don't think anything there.

Pull the flywheel off, Look for any spots on the flywheel, inside, underside, bottom or outside. sounds like something may have been left loose or just not fitting properly and rubbing. I have seen where stator bolts was replaced and the head was just a little bit bigger and caused binding once the flywheel was installed.

Took flywheel and stator off. Just put nut back on shaft and still does it while turning with ratchet

that is really odd that this new problem came at this time. Is there any way some loose part made its way into the internals of the engine while you was doing this work? or maybe there was always something laying inside and while you was working on it moved the motor in a way that dislodged it from a "safe" place to somewhere that is causing havoc?

Nothing from what I've done. But previous owner no clue.

I thought you stated that the problem was still there with all removed, spinning crank with the flywheel nut. attach a photo of the top view with the flywheel removed only.

Will do this evening. The drag was still there but the more I turned with ratchet seemed to let up so I thought I would try cranking with flywheel only. Sorry about that.

That grinding escenario showed up recently after a long motor stop if that's the case while was running strong before ?

Tilt motor fully up, remove spark plugs, squirt an overdose of 50:1 fuel oil rtio inside each cylinder, let it soak/penetrate for some minutes, spin the flywheel slightly back and forth several times. If the issue cancels out, thumbs up. If the grinding noise continues surely any of the internal rotating parts such as bearings are shot due to poor lubrication or the motor went diving with previous owner which you don't know anything about...

I will give it a shot this evening. Motor had been sitting for a while when I got it. I did do several soaks with seafoam and fuel/oil mix and hand turning for about a month off and on before I ever hooked to power to it. Has been running strong until stator fried. Only other thing I did was replace the top end cap o ring about a month ago. Will update this evening with results and some pics.

with what procedure did do you do this??? did you "losen up" tha block halves to replace tha o-ring or did you just remove tha 4 bolts holdin' it and pry tha cap out?
really makes no difference.. ya have something wrong and it needs ta be found out... pull it and take it apart.............. could be a bearing, could be a sealin' ring ya don't know!
