Flywheel magnet polarity

Hello all,

I have a question regarding the polarity of the magnets on the flywheel of my 97 sport jet 175.

The stator went out on the motor so I removed the flywheel to replace it. When I did I found three of the magnets to be loose. I then jb welded them back on. When doing this, I took them out and cleaned them and arbitrarily put them back in place, not thinking about polarity at the time. After getting it all back together, the boat seemed to run fine and get up to speed normally, but the tach was low by approximately 50%. It worked fine before I messed with anything.

I did some research and it sounds like the tach signal may come from the stator and has something to do with the polarity of these magnets....and so does the trigger wheel.

Does anyone know how the magnets are supposed to be positioned?

Thanks,
Ben

This post from way back talks about magnet orientation and sticking them back on the flywheel. It is in the Johnson/Evinrude section, but sparks don't care if a Merc or JonnyRude flywheel is making the juice.

The magnets should be N S N S, etc. There may be marks or paint dots to mark either North or South.
