I have a 1976 650 65 hp.3 cylinder Mercury. I un bolted the flywheel from the center crank bolt and I didn't mark it. So now I have no ideal in what direction to bolt it back on. The flywheel can be bolted in every direction. So my ? is when no/1 cylinder is tdc where should my timimg mark on flywheel be. Using a clock dail spark plugs would be 6 o'clock. My motor doesn't have a timing pointer> And will the direction change the timing??

Most engines have a slick wedge (taper) on the crankshaft where the flywheel rests and a groove which matches up with a groove in the flywheel. A square "Woodruff Key" installs in that slot. The timing of the crank to the flywheel is critical so the woodruff key must be in perfect condition.

The reason for the woodruff key/vs a spline like is on the steering wheel of a car, is that if you strike something (underwater object), the key shears and saves your crank from the inertia stored in the spinning flywheel. BTDT

DUH !! all that is known. Like I said before I unbolted from the center crank magnet, there are 6 or 7 bolts. The main part of the flywheel the teeth and magnets bolt to the center well that is what I trying to figure out. Thanks

The 1975 models had the timing pointer packed in with the emergency starter rope and it fit into a notch in the engine block for tune up purposes. I have the factory manual in front of me now and it does not mention a removable pointer for the later models with the distributorless ignition. The pictures in the factory manual do not show where the timing pointer is on the later models. Is the timing decal still on the flywheel?

There is still I timing mark on the flywheel. If anybody has a 1976 650 could pull no. 1 plug bring it to top dead center and tell where there timing mark is ( spark plugs being at 6 o/clock of a clock )

John, The Merc flywheels have 8 bolts that means the flywheel may be installed 360 degrees divided by 8 ways is 45 degrees. So you only need to get the motor timed within 45 degrees and you cannot install it wrong.

Set the top cylinder to top dead center with a screwdriver. Get is as accurate as possible. Now rotate the outer flywheel (crank not moving) until TDC faces the carbs, or slightly CCW from the cards, sorta near the throttle arm. Now turn the outer flywheel to nearest bolt hole and install the bolts.

Now unless you have messed with the throttle arm ans spark arm set screws, the timing should still be where it was before you removed the outer flywheel.

Thanks I'll give it a try. I have another thread about trigger wiring. My new wiring is different coloered wires than the old one. I have manuel and my 65hp. triple wiring diagram is not in it, it has 3 other triples in it and they are all the same. So would my motor be wired the same and would a trigger wired wrong hurt anything?

Re: flywheel direction ??/

maxrules.com has some Merc wiring diaghrams. You might look there. You may need to match up the wiring and create a cross connect diaghram.
