Flywheel and aluminium shavings

I just finished swapping lower units and it does fit B to D lowers. Motor ran great for about 20 minutes then there was a terrible squealing sound from under the cover . When I removed the cover there was shavings all over the motor( look like aluminium ) .They seem to be from under flywheel around stator . Is the stator or assembly made of aluminium or could it be the flywheel .I have not been able to get the flywheel off yet but have read some pretty good ideas on here how to go about it .If anyone has had a similiar problem would appreciate what you found out .Thanks Ron

Dont know your motor.

But your stator plate is probably aluminum cast. And your flywheel is milled aluminum.

To tell whats scraping, you'll need to pull the flywheel.

Gueses?
Condensor came loose, Stator plate screws loosened, coil is loose. Small rock lodged in there, if you had the flywheel off before, could be a nut, bolt screw or tools left in there.

Thanks... the motor and boat are new to me and have been very intresting so far. Previous owner had not used boat in atleast 2 years but license plate says 4 years .Changed fluid in lower unit and installed the famous telltale and took it for a run last week .Lower shaft snapped in half so replaced lower unit on the weekend ,then took it out again last night and more problems.Previous owner said he had $1100. worth of work done to it before he parked it . There was a new coil installed ,impeller and no gasket ( thats what happened to lower unit ) not sure what else the mechanic FIXED,the motor is a ( model 1508F9A ) so I believe it to be a 1989 .I will be trying to pull the flywheel tonight and that sounds like it will be fun also.Thanks for any help I do appreciate it. Flywheel removal: Gear puller with #8 bolts screw into top of flywheel. Crank down hope for pop. Use impact hope for pop. Finally follow the manual's instructions. Using thermosdat cover as pivot point, use prybar to lift up on flywheel from underneath while smacking gearpuller center post with a hammer. Manual says flywheel key should be facing the prybar. Careful not to damage underside of flywheel and NEVER use clawed gear puller. Replace key and clean surfaces thoroughly before replacing. Don't lubricate. Sounds like the stator came loose.

Okay tried some grade 5 bolts and broke a couple of them ,went today and got some grade 8 tightened down a couple of times while banging on top of the flywheel and bang it came loose. It was one of the bolts holding the stator that had loosened off about half an inch and was gouging into the bottom of the flywheel . Cleaned everything up as good as possible put locktite on the 4 stator bolts and put it back together. The bad news is even with a plastic type hammer my neighbour was able to hit near the edge and break off a piece about 1 inch long by about a fourth of an inch wide. Put it on anyways and started it up wondering what would happen and it seemed to run smooth. Wondering if it will be safe or is there a chance flywheel may self distruct at high rpm's ?? Thanks

Find the missing piece and use super glue gel. Stuff is amazing. I was told even a small chunk will throw it out of balance and could eventually damage the engine. No personal experience to say one way or the other. I'd think if it's out of balance enough to do damage you'll feel, see, or hear the vibration.
