99 150 merc - stator replaced by dealer last year. Engine over revved(6200) this year and would not restart. Found to be timing problem. Discovered fly wheel had spun on the crank shaft. Splines on fly wheel shot. Lock nut very loose and took no effort with puller to pull flywheel off. Has any one seen flywheel spin on their own or am I looking at shoddywork manship in that the flywheel was not torqued down to spec upon stator replacement last year??

Re: Fly wheel spun

One thing is for sure, it was not replaced properly the last time is was removed. Flywheels do not suddenly do that (loosen-up on their own).<br />Shearing the key in a flywheel CAN happen on rare occasions, and is usually the result of striking an underwater obstruction. I have only seen this happen once ,and I was just a teenager (I'm in my very late 40s now).

Re: Fly wheel spun

Merc had a prob with flywheel/crank fit a couple years ago ....the fact you had a dealer in there a year ago an didnt catch it smells bad.....ones i seen rattled like they got a loose rod.....perhaps yours was fine until the 'repair'....
