Fly Bridge Shifter Binding

I have a 1976 Fiberform Baja 24CB. The shift cable from the bridge is routed down into the cabin to the main helm where it connects to one side of the shifter. The shift cable from the outdrive connects to the other side of that same shifter.

If I disconnect the bridge cable from the cabin shifter, both cables move freely with absolutely no resistance, but when I make that connection, the bridge shifter becomes extremely stiff and sometimes will not even pull back far enough to go into reverse.

I have followed and examined that cable from the bridge to the cabin shifter and there are no sharp bends or kinks. Every bend is large and smooth and that's clearly the way that it was designed. I have also adjusted the cable forward and back just prior to the connection to see if that would relieve some of the binding but with no luck.

Any ideas would be appreciated as I am out of ideas.

Thanks in advance
