If you are talking about the "muffs" type, they will always squirt excess water out around them.

Mercrusier Shuts Down

7/16/23 My 2014 Mercrusier 350 Mag ECT fuel injection engine shits down after say an hour of perfectly good running. It sputters a couple of times, pops then fails to crank. The engine turns over but there appears to be no spark. Sometimes after a run and sitting idle for a while, it just fails...

I know Volvo 5.0L had a tube you'd connect a regular garden hose to. I don't have that option on my Merc 4.3L so can't help you there.
