Flooring thickness?

I am replacing the floor in my project boat, and am wondering, the factory used 1/2" flooring. Should I use the same or should I use 3/4"? I have always used the 3/4, but all the boats I have done have had it too.

Nathan Djohns19 is right 1/2 is fine, use a quality wood with the most layers you can find. The more layers the stronger it will be ;)

Re: Flooring thickness?

It really depends on the boat design. In some applications you can eliminate structure by going 3/4". It can save both labor and material compared to 1/2" installations while giving a major increase in strength. I'm doing a project now and the 3/4" ply doesn't need stiffeners like the 1/2" did. Weight gain about the same as one sheet of 1/2" ply (approx 60 sq ft x 1/4" on a 17'r).

Re: Flooring thickness?

I need to replace a piece of wood on the front of my pontoon boat.(which has rotted through) Do I use marine plywood, which is very hard to find in my area, or can I use another type of plywood ?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Flooring thickness?

I am sure NathanY finished his boat long ago, NateB.

I think the quality of the material is much more important than the thickness. I would rather use 1/2" marine grade PW than 3/4" CDX.

I am sure BW uses only the best quality, but many builders use junk.

i used a 5/8 marine grade plywood. doesn't really matter about the marine grade but if you get a good one side should do tons. depends on what your going to cover it with. just my 2 cents worth.
