what is the white thing that wraps around a piece of wood (some kind of plastic liner) its a lot easier than carpets and seems to be used a lot more on newer boats. I have a rotting piece in my floor and need to replace the wood and then put that white stuff around it and re install....need to know what its called and if possible where i can find it?

Re: floor wrap?

Are you describing the white colored coating on wood that waterproofs it and provides a smooth, hard surface, similar to the rest of the boat's hull? If so, that's gelcoat or fiberglass, which you can replace by re-glassing to an extent.

Otherwise, it would be helpful to see some pictures?

That's a deck, Beauff. Boats don't have floors. :)

Re: floor wrap?

ooooh....1 quick question....when you put the gelcoat on it, it just looks like a piece of plastic right? it doesnt look like just a piece of wood painted white?

Re: floor wrap?

Ayuh,.....

Gelcoat is a form of Resin,.... It's painted on,....
After it cures, it's sanded down to it's final finish.....

The Actual use for Gelcoat is to be shot into a Mold,+ a hull is built over it,+ then the whole thing is removed from the mold.....
The Odds of you getting it to look Exactly like the rest of the hull are quite Slim,.....
But Possible......

I dont mean to sound rough but you might want to do some reading and researching about gelcoat and fiberglass materials basics. Gelcoat is not something that is just placed over the wood. You say "a gelcoat", its not like a object that you just put 1 gelcoat on it is painted on per say. It is something that takes some experiance to work with. From what your origional post was i dont think that getcoat is what you were talking about. You said that there was something that wraped around the wood. I dont know of anything that goes around wood like how you describe. I just think you should do some reading about glassing and gelcoat. There is some how-to videos on youtube and a couple of other places that you could look at. there is also some videos at a different forum that is available to view (not iboats). Good luck and i hope you get the info you are after.

Re: floor wrap?

rd.....

just want to add to drews post.

were only guessing that your talking about gellcoat......

if you had pics......

but as erik said ...."if it looks like the rest of the hull"...then that is most likely the gellcoat......

before i joined this site...i read...used the search feature...then read some more....

what you are doing...i think.....is called a "deck replacment"....

there is lots of deck replacement threads here...even on the main page....
there is 5.......

you need to tear out the rotten wood......inspect the foam and stringers...replace the deck ......fiberglass in the new deck...and cover with product of choice....gellcoat...carpet...paint...rhino liner....whatever you choose.......

but please...do your self a favor.....and read here....before you jump in and gell a peice of plywood.....(or mdf for that matter)

Re: floor wrap?

rhino liner sounds like its exactly what im talking about but maybe only because it looks like just a liner....its almost like a pool liner wrapped around wood and its white but its hard...its what most commercial fisherman use because its easy to just spray the deck off when you get blood on it.
