I'm new to the forum and I quess I haven't looked at enough threads yet but my question is why do we have to have wood to rot in our boats structure? It doesn't seem all that difficult to construct a aluminum structure that would support floor and the hull. Maybe I have missed that discussion on the forum but it seems like a good idea. What do you think?

Re: Floor and deck structure

Welcome it iBoats!

Good question. Back in the 50's and 60's some Boat MFG's in fact did use Aluminum Stringers in their Glass Boats. I'm not Totally sure why the practice was discontinued but I suspect that it had something to do with the fact that while aluminum does not ROT it will corrode and thus weaken and could cause it to fail structurally. Maybe someone with more knowledge on the matter will chime in.
