Floor Adhesive Question... Need quick answer if possible!

Hey everybody, brand new to the site and this is my first post so bare with me. I am restoring a 1988 17' bluefin aluminum fishing boat. I plan to post pics and info from the build in the near future. But my urgent question is on floor adhesive. I used high quality 3/4'' plywood for the new floor and coated it with spar varnish and then some rustoleum marine floor paint over that. I purchased exterior carpet from lowes and also some Chapco Impressions outdoor carpet adhesive. But on the back it says not to use over paint. So am I screwed with that? I still have the reciept and they are unopened. If that won't work, what would you guys recommend using over the painted wood?? Thanks for any input!!

Never done a boat floor. Anytime you add any mastic over a painted surface you bond is only as good as the paint.

Could you use short staples and staple it down?

A lot of the "Tinners" recommend using this...

I used the Home Depot Roberts 6700 adhesive which is cheap and works well. I used it over paint. You can't go wrong with the contact cement WoG posted either.

Thanks for the quick responses. I think I am going to return the Chapco stuff and run to home depot for the Roberts 6700. I looked up the data sheet for the Roberts and it doesn't say not to use it over paint like the Chapco clearly states. And ezmobee said he has used it right over paint. I thought about doing removable carpet with snaps, but I recently bought a newer boat and want to keep this ones restoration as simple as possible so I can get it sold faster. I will post pictures of the restoration in progess ASAP.

I just went thru the same dilemma. The Roberts 6700 will get mushy if it gets wet...but will reharden after it dries out. I just purchased Weldwood All Weather outdoor carpet adhesive. It seems to be the best adhesive for outdoor installations.

Contact cement looks good also, but once you stick the carpet down.....it's stuck. So there's no room for error when installing carpet using the contact cement.

This is my recent thread regarding carpet adhesive

I have not experienced that.

I'm just going by the test that guy did on Tinboats.

Has your boat ever gotten soaked in a rainstorm etc? Id be curious to hear real world experiences with the Roberts 6700.

Yes, and my carpet did not fall off.

Haha....def didn't expect your carpet to fall off. I'm just curious if the carpet could be peeled back if it was soaked.

If you get bored....glue a scrap piece of your carpet down with the Roberts 6700(let it cure for required time). Then soak it for a day.

I'm curious to know if that guys experience with Roberts 6700 was just a fluke.
