I currently have a 79 15hp Evinrude and a 77 70hp Evinrude. Both motors seem to have the same problem, the float needle valve keeps sticking once I run them, and they won't start after they set a day or two. After going thru the fuel system from tank to fuel pump exit, both motors needed to have the carbs taken off and cleaned. Although I didn't use a new rebuild kit, the motors ran excellent after cleaning..till they sat for a few days, then, the same thing. Could it be the ethenol in the gas??? All the jet holes showed a small, black ring where the rubber end of the needle touched them. Any suggestions would be appreciated..thanks.

did you replace ALL the fuel lines? the rubber breaks down and will cause you issues. ethanol "may" cause the process to be a bit worse.

........an in-line filter, as close to the carb"s" as possible may tell the tale. get a see through filter, and keep an eye on it.....it could turn black pretty quick.

I don't know if you removed my last post but all the rubber in your fuel system wears faster. Also (16oz of water in 20gl of gas = 3gl of water and everyone is having problems) just make sure float pin and bowl are replaced in the right way with no ristrictions. My kid's bike kept draining fuel because the float pin was turned.

I have replaced all the fuel lines. I will put on the fuel filter and see what happens. I guess I'm gonna have to disconnect the fuel line and run the engines till they run dry in the bowl, that should let the float come down and keep the needle from sticking shut. Thanks for your responses, this site is the best I've seen on almost all topics.

If the needles have an indentation on the rubber tip, needs to be replaced. Later model oem needles had different tip for the junk fuel.

It is a bad idea to run a multi carb engine out of fuel like you are talking about, since the top ones will run out first and run dry without lube til the bottom one runs out. I have had some issues with a stuck float needle in the bottom carb on my 60hp Johnson, found out if I prime it up with the bulb, the day before I use it, it frees up.
