Can someone tell me what part of the float my "great" manual is telling me to take a measurement from....please go here to view scanned page of manual:
http://pages.zdnet.com/len1313/lennylouis/id11.html

top, center or bottom? It's a 2bbl Mercarb off of a Mercruiser 170/470. Thanks for any help in advance.

-Jersey

Re: Float adjustment???

The scketch reads "From the toe of the lip of the float". This would be close to the point the float meets the fuel if it were inside the bowl.
It's not just mercarb that is vaugue in it's description, but between everyone here, we will figure it out.
The kits (at least the ones I get) have a
a small ruller that looks like a carpenter's square in miniture. These are great for presetting the float level before assembly, but I STILL never get it exact the first time.
But my advise is to not loose too much sanity here with the float level. As long as it controls the needle valve to allow fuel in,and still shuts off the fuel before it spills-out of the overflow, you should be ok.

Re: Float adjustment???

Thnks for the quick response 12footer. I have the small ruler but it's from a holley kit....same thing i guess. The float does control the needle valve but i'm having a problem with dripping fuel down the throat at idle and after i shut her down. I think this is what's causing my rough starts and backfiring through the carb off of idle (i checked timing, timing adv, points, intake leaks) The needle and seat are a perfect seal and i rebuilt eveything else in the carb. I think the float level may be a little too high and needs to be correctly set. I just don't know what part of the float they're calling the "lip"! I'm sure i could trial and error this but soon enough the gaskets aren't going to appreciate it!

Re: Float adjustment???

It could be a reed hanging open. If it spits the fuel out of the front of the carb.
If you can pump the primer ball and it gets hard, the float valve is doing it's job.

Re: Float adjustment???

Jersey, welcome to the mercarb owners club......is a common problem....float height has changed many times in these carbs just for this prob.book specs aint gonna help much....measure what you got at tip of float to gasket surface...dont matter what it is, increase it by 1/4 inch.....will help.

Re: Float adjustment???

thanks guys. sorry 12footer...forgot to mention this carb is on a mercruiser 170. I re-did, re-checked and re-adjusted the entire carb last night and she stopped dripping on idle and after shut off. She still coughs on quick acceleration at any rpm but i can work with that. Thanks again for the replies.

Re: Float adjustment???

The two barrel carb you are talking about is either a merc/rochester carb... my recomendation for anyone that has one is to replace float with brass... costs a little more but worth it. The popping you are getting is from accelerator pump running lean, I hope you replaced accelerator pump on your rebuild. Quite frequently the needle & seat will get dirt/deposit in it which causes the dripping down throat of carb when @ idle & cut off. As instructed earlier, I kick (float)it back just a little to keep it from dripping. Also, I keep old parts in zip-lock in glove compartment (needle/seat & old accelerator pump) should they be needed.

You can get carb kit at any parts store for 15-20 $$$... plus float... They are tagged w/ Merc number/plus Rochester Number. Any questions... email below.

fone_man
fone_man@bellsouth.net
