I started today on ,y project to replace the carpet on my hand me down '87 bayliner capri. After pulling up the old carpet I found that the fiberglass around the high traffic areas had worn down to bare wood, and I found a soft spot up at the little walk area by the bow. I poked my thumb at the soft spot and was able to push my hand through it and ended up pulling up a foot and a half long rotted spot. I understand the gold standard would be to replace the whole floor but that isn't a realistic option for me. It is my plan to cut out and patch the hole then glass the patch and fix the worn glass in the other areas.
Does anyone had any advice or tricks?

Re: Fix-a-floor

Just replace the whole floor ull spend just as much time on the glass work for some Mickey Mouse patches as u would replace the whole floor and at least u know its solid....or if u really wanted to Mickey Mouse it just put painted plywood pl'ed to the existing floor I just tore apart a boat for a friend where the previous owner knew the floor was garbage so he just put plywood on top.

And I bet you if the floor is rotten the transom is soaked...depending on the factory glass work which I bet is garbage u might be in for stringers too. I would say do it right or not at all

I had the same thing in my boat...a tiny little hole in the floor I thought I was going to patch. No, that's not going to happen. The whole boat was rotten inside...

Pull up the whole floor or you will have to do it again for the ones you miss. Besides, it will need done to replace the stringers that need replaced or will soon. While the guts are out, the transom is now or soon most likely too. I never heard of a "patch a little rot" project that did not find much more in a season or two.

Re: Fix-a-floor

My boat had a soft spot in the floor. The crack is visible on the port side near the front of the engine.

You won't find much help.for patching a boat here. I searched for that help once upon a time, and now I'm rebuilding my boat properly! Rot just creates an unsafe boat, and these folks won't take the chance of recommending things to make you and your family unsafe. Park it and fix it right :)

Boat 101...Decks, Transoms and Stringers all work together to make up the structural integrity of your boat. They all must be solid to make your boat safe. If the floor is soft then you should check and make sure that the stringers and transom are all good too! Safety #1 Boats usually rot from the Bottom up so a Soft floor is usually just a symptom of problems below.
