Re: fishing with drop shot ???

I have shyed away from from the normal set-up because I dont like the way it looks with the hook tied right to the line like it is.  <br /><br />Ya, I know, it catches lots of fish. Now, When I do use this type of rigging, I tie a large loop where the hook goes so that the hook actually sticks out away from the main line at least a couple inches. The two lines of the loop actually help hold the bait out away from the main line. Use a small lite worm with a lot of action with very little movement. I use about a 3/8 oz. weight mostly unless I have to fish more than about 15'. Small circle Hooks are becomeing the hook of choice because you dont have to set the hook much and the fish are hooked right in the corner of the mouth almost every time. I just toss it a little bit away from the boat, let it sink to the bottom, drop my rod about 6" and shake the worm with very little twitches of the tip. Strikes can be very lite or hard.

Another thing I might mention, sometimes it isnt necesary to impart much action at all to the bait, you just have to let the fish tell ya what they want. It is a "VERY" versatile way to fish, and I should actually fish it more than I do. The distance from the weight to the hook depends on the structure. If in grass, usuall the hook needs to be just above the grass. It can range from 1' to 5'. I like a 6 1/2' - 7' Meadium action rod and about 8# line, I use a spinning set up. Just a sweep of the rod is usually all you need for a hookset.

Re: fishing with drop shot ???

Just finished with a guided fishing trip yesterday and loved the results from drop shoting. Just as B F explained. We were in 17 ft. very clear water so we casted as far as possible. Reeled in slowly, feel a hit then set. The action was non stop, made me a believer. :D

Re: fishing with drop shot ???

All this talk about dropshottin made me want to go out last evening so I just took the makings for dropshotting. Second cast I hauled in a four and a half pounder, then in less than two hours I had five fish that would have weighed about 15#s. All off of points. Post spawn.<br /><br />I found that using a weight that will just let you feel tight line when you lift the rod without lifting the weight off the bottom is about right, I think that worked out to about a half oz. The bite was a pretty solid hit.

Good job lube :) The guide I was with was a big believer in watching the line for movement . His knot for the hook was just a polamur {sp} about 18 in. up to get it just above the cabbage. The hook had to be facing down if it came out facing up he just ran the free end through the eye once more to change it. Then added a large split shot to the line end. I now have one rod set up in my boat :D

Sounds like what you were doing was a variation of true dropshotting. The rigging is exactly the same but you will get a lot of discusion as to whether the hook should face up or down, I fish mine up. Dropshotting was actually IMHO started as a stationary bait, but can be fished in any # of ways as you have discovered.<br />I may have come accross as a dropshot expert, but I have just started fishing it this year.

Old timers were doing something similar way back in the 40's (or earlier) on lake Michigan. They would use multiple hooks and keep setting the hook when the perch would hit it. They would pull the line in when they thought they had several perch taking up space on the hooks and it was time to rebait.<br /><br />Also, been doing similar with a "Wolf River Rig" for as long as I can remember. Can be used anywhere there is a little current. The only difference is that you tie a small 3-way swivel on where the hook would normally go. Then tie a short piece of mono for the hook. Tie another piece of lighter mono on the 3rd arm of the swivel and attach the sinker. If the sinker gets stuck in the rocks, the lighter line for the sinker will break, and all you will lose is the sinker.<br /><br />

"Let the fish tell you what they want"<br /><br />Darn guides...<br /> I've now heard that from three guides (I think lubedude is a guide?)<br /><br />Seems to me like that's trying not to catch fish...OR...<br />When you are catching fish, switch, and see if it's better or worse.<br /><br />The key there seems to be, a person is already catching fish.<br /><br />Sorry, "let the fish tell you what they want" just never seems to apply to me.. <br />About the best I can tell, they don't want whatever I'm doing...lol.

This statement is very much accurate. It doesnt matter what you are fishing with, there are always several ways to fish that particular bait, be it fast slow deep shallow, twitch, jerk whatever. If you see a fish follow your bait, that usually means that if you paused the fish probably would have hit it. Every time you catch a fish, think about what you were doing when you got the hit. Did it hit the bait while it was sinking or when you picked it up, while you were reeling it in. Thats what we mean when we say "Let the fish tell you what they want". Or, you could just stick your head in the water and yell, "Hey, what do you want this morning"! <br /><br />Never go to the lake with the mindset of just what you are going to do no matter what. Thats a sure way to get skunked.

I think there is some luck to fishing. If you have the combination of .... descent bait right in front of a fish ... and the fish is hungry .... you'll catch fish. LOL

There is a lot of truth to what you say, after you learn how to fish and master your equipment, Most of the "Skill" is actually finding the fish.

With Bass, post spawn can be a real killer. I finally found the fish this morning right out in the middle of the arm I was fishing. It wasn`t skill either, it was just plain dumb luck. I had a loop in the spool and made a long cast out in the middle to get out the loop and caught a fish. Viola, there they were all the time.

Re: fishing with drop shot ???

I got schooled on drop shot this weekend. I was in a tournament as a non-boater, so the boater was calling the shots. We drop shot for about half the day. He boated five on weed beds. I didn't do as well, missed one good bite, got one perch, and one pickerel. I didn't get anywhere near as many bites. He had some super light Japanese brand fluorocarbon; I was fishing twelve-pound mono. At one point his drop shot rod fouled up and he switched to a rod with 10 lb mono, the bites stopped. The line means allot.

Drop shotting ive never done it that much but let me tell ya something, for the past 3 years ive been throwing a 4" worm on an 1/8 oz sinker and was catching good fish then alot of people around here has started drop shoting and throwing the shaky head, well i've switched to 10" worm and im catching more fish now,not big ones but more, ive caught fish that the worms bigger than they are.just something to ponder over.

as Ld says gotta keep an open mind.
