Generally speaking, Grease on gears and oil on bearings and keep the quantities of both to a minimum.

GREASE: Main Gear, Pinion Gear, Pinion Yoke, Worm Shaft (light grease), Worm Gear, Release Slider, Worm Shaft Guard, Anti-Reverse ratchet (when applicable), Continuous Anti-reverse clutch sleeve (when applicable)

OIL: Spool Shaft, Spool Shaft ends, Handle Knobs (both sides), Spool Release Mechanism, Level Wind Stabilizer Bar, Ball Bearings.

The products I use are Super Lube synthetic grease and Abu rocket oil.

I also use the Quantum Hot Sauce. You can get it in both oil and grease.

The Hot Sauce oil works extremely well, their grease is overrated however, and over priced. I've seen little/no difference between it and the Zebco reel grease at WalMart. It is a pretty shade of red though. Avoid wheel bearing grease unless your reel has wheel bearings or it's the only thig you have. Dingbats right about the quantities. I've seen plenty of reel gummed up with too much lube. Not a good idea to mix the stuff either. Soak the bearings in acetone to remove the old oil, dry them in a lint free towel and put the hair dryer to em to cook out any residual acetone. Then add the slick stuff.

Winter Green oil is correct.
I was in the Navy as an instrumentman. Clocks, watches, gauges, typewriters.

We used Winter Green OIL. to loosen parts.
Dont know where to get it now.
But you are right Mr Shellac, its Winter green oil. Maybe the old timer mixed it with something else.
Mitchell

Sounds nuts but my dad always used Vicks vapor rub inside the reel housing on the gears. It has worked well for me also. Course he trot lined with ivory soap also.

I use saltwater, bait slime, and fish blood on my rods, and reels. Then twice a year I take them to Reel Doctor and he handels it from there. Never have any problems. :D
